1. JavaScript Object Literals vs. Strict RFC 8259 JSON

A common pitfall for web developers is confusing JavaScript object notation with RFC 8259 JSON (JavaScript Object Notation). While JavaScript engines permit single quotes, unquoted dictionary keys, comments, and trailing commas, the official JSON specification rejects all of them.

When an API endpoint or config loader expects JSON, feeding it relaxed JavaScript syntax produces immediate parse failures.

2. The 4 Most Frequent JSON Syntax Failures

Error 1: Trailing Commas

× Invalid:

{
  "name": "GoToolstack",
  "active": true,
}

Engine Diagnostic: Trailing comma in object is not allowed at position 42

✓ Valid Fix: Remove the comma following the final key-value pair.

Error 2: Single Quotes Instead of Double Quotes

× Invalid:

{'status': 'success'}

Engine Diagnostic: Expected double-quoted property name in JSON at position 1

✓ Valid Fix: JSON strings and property names must strictly use double quotes ("status": "success").

Error 3: Unquoted Property Names

× Invalid:

{count: 42}

Engine Diagnostic: Expected property name or '}' in JSON at position 1

✓ Valid Fix: Wrap every dictionary key in double quotes ({"count": 42}).

Error 4: Comments Inside Payload

× Invalid:

// Configuration settings
{"port": 8080}

Engine Diagnostic: Unexpected character '/' at position 0

✓ Valid Fix: Standard JSON does not support comments. Strip all inline and block comments before parsing.

3. The 64-Bit Integer Trap: Lossless Precision

In standard JavaScript, numbers are represented as IEEE 754 64-bit double-precision floating point. The safe integer limit is:

Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER = 9,007,199,254,740,991 (2^53 - 1)

When an API passes large IDs, Twitter tweet IDs, or blockchain transaction hashes (such as 9007199254740993), native JSON.parse() silently corrupts the number by rounding it to 9007199254740992. GoToolstack integrates a custom lossless tokenizer that preserves arbitrary-precision integers without decimal truncation.

4. Technical Limitations & Boundary Conditions

Browser RAM and Large Payloads: Formatting minified JSON files larger than 50 MB can momentarily freeze the main UI thread during DOM string rendering. For massive multi-gigabyte log dumps, streaming command-line tools like jq are recommended.

  • Special Floating Point Values: NaN, Infinity, and -Infinity are not valid JSON tokens.
  • Undefined and Functions: Neither undefined nor JavaScript functions can be serialized into standard JSON.
  • Circular References: Objects that refer to themselves cannot be converted to JSON structures.
